1. Keep dry

Store the saw blade and saw in a dry place or tool box to prevent rusting.

2. Lubricate the blade

Lubricate your blade with gun oil, wax paste, or lubricant after each use and before storing. You can use a rag to wipe off the gun oil or a professional lubricator. The paste wax should be wiped off after the blade has been left on for a few minutes. All of these options will prevent rusting and help the saw blade slide through the wood.

3. Oiling the handle

If you have a saw blade saw with a wooden handle, periodically wipe it down with a little boiled linseed oil to prevent moisture and dirt. If your handle is rusting where it attaches to the blade, remove the handle and clean the groove. Use medium grade steel wool or fine sandpaper on the handle to sand the rough surface and remove the stain (then apply oil).

4. Remove blade rust with a razor

A well-cared-for saw blade may never rust, but if it does, a razor blade will help. Remove the handle and place the blade on a flat work surface. You will need a small diamond or triangular shaped file that fits the profile of the saw teeth. It is also helpful to clean the saw blade as described earlier and work in a well-lit area.

Work down the blade, filing each tooth bevel and calculating the stroke as if you were sharpening a knife. You will need more files if the blade is dull, or less if you are only maintaining the blade. Try to match the factory angle of the bevel of the serrated teeth.

Next, make sure all the teeth are the same length. File off any longer teeth, as they will do more than their share of the work.

If your saw blade has rakes, check them. These are like chipped teeth and they should clean up next to the cut caused by the saw teeth. You should file your rakes sharp and make sure they are all 0.5 mm shorter than the saw teeth (otherwise they will bog the blade down).

Finally, check your blade for bent teeth. Many types of serrated teeth are bent outward and slightly twisted so that they cut wider than the thickness of the blade (to prevent the blade from snagging). If any teeth are bent out of shape, do your best to bend them back into the blade pattern (you will usually need a special setup tool).
